The Inspiration Behind Mary Loved a Little Lamb

Beyond the Rhyme

David believes that when we only know the rhyme, we miss out on the most beautiful part of the story: the girl herself. His goal in sharing Mary’s full journey is to transform a childhood memory into a meaningful lesson on compassion. By uncovering the true history of Sterling’s own Mary Sawyer, David hopes to inspire readers to see how their own small acts of kindness can create ripples in history, just as Mary’s did so many years ago.

The Creators

  • David Barlow | Author

I grew up in the Rocky Mountains and love cycling, fly fishing, and skiing. My mother instilled in me a love for stories, and now as a father of four and a new grandpa, I continue that tradition. Years ago, I learned that “Mary Had a Little Lamb” was based on the true story of Mary Sawyer. Inspired by it, I felt compelled to share her story. Mary’s compassion moved me, and I found that, in many ways, I also relate to the lamb who needed rescue.

  • Chelsea Simar | Illustrator

Born in Utah and visiting my family’s farm in Idaho, I’ve always loved animals, big and small. As a child, I sat outside to sketch the farm animals while enjoying a Pepsi and cookie (thanks, grandma). When David introduced me to this book, I instantly connected with Mary’s compassion for her animals and enthusiastically took the opportunity to illustrate her deep love for them.
